The 12th IAAF World Junior Championships was awarded to Bydgoszcz (POL) by the IAAF Council at its meeting in March 2006 in Osaka (JPN). Dates were also approved during this Council.

Bydgoszcz has 400,000 inhabitants. The altitude is 60m above sea level. Situated between two rivers (Vistula and Brda), this city is surrounded by forests, and known for its technical architecture and for its green areas. Being 659 years old, Bydgoszcz is also famous for its cultural and academic institutions.

The climate at the time of the Championships is rather mild with the average temperature about 25C and air humidity about 70%.
