Dong Bin will try to make history in Portland as he aims to become the third Chinese athlete to win a world indoor title.

Dong, a finalist at the IAAF World Indoor Championships Istanbul 2012, has shown excellent form so far this season, improving the Asian indoor record to a world-leading 17.41m. He backed it up with a comfortable 17.25m win at the National Indoor Grand Prix five days later.

Only sprint hurdler Liu Xiang (2008) and shot putter Sui Xinmei (1991) have reached the top of the podium for China in the history of the championships.

With all three medallists from Sopot absent, Portland will see three new names on the podium. Trying to reach that honour is Romania’s Marian Oprea, who is competing in his sixth World Indoor Championships.

Portugal’s 2008 Olympic and 2015 European indoor champion Nelson Evora wants to equal or improve his bronze medal performance from the 2008 edition. US indoor champion Chris Carter and IAAF World Tour winner Omar Craddock will be carrying the best hopes for the host nation.

France’s European champion Benjamin Compaore and Spain’s 2015 European indoor silver medallist Pablo Torrijos will also be contending for the medals.
