The two-lap list is led by phenomenal Sahily Diago, of the strong Cuban team. Diago’s Area junior record of 1:57.74, set in Havana in May, is the second fastest time in 2014 by any female athlete regardless of age.
Diago, who now stands ninth on the junior all-time list, has also proved that it was no fluke by a series of solid performances on the international circuit and she is possibly one of the hottest favourites for any event in Eugene.
Ethiopia’s Zeyituna Mohammed is the next-fastest entered at 2:01.55, a mark set at altitude in Addis Ababa. Australia’s Georgia Wassall at 2:01.78 and Iceland’s Anita Hinriksdottir, who was fourth in Barcelona 2012 and the 2013 world youth and European junior champion, could also be part for what is perceived to be a battle for the minor medals behind Diago
