Astrid Kumbernuss, the 29 year old Olympic Champion (1996) and double World Champion (1995-1997), has returned to competition after a year long maternity break.

The SC Neubrandenburg athlete – who did not make her expected comeback at the IAAF Grand Prix in Rio de Janeiro – took part in her first competition last weekend, at the 25th Hallesche Werfertage, an annual meeting in Halle (Germany) which focuses on the throws.

Kumbernuss placed second with a good throw of 19.10m, proof that the German athlete has rediscovered her physical form. The event was won by her young compatriot Nadine Kleinart who achieved 19.52, best throw of the year.

Astrid Kumbernuss’ results in Halle: 18.59 – 19.10 – 18.91 x – x- x
