Ali Shahrokhi won the first medal of this Championships for Iran, as he assured himself of victory in the boys’ Discus Throw with his first effort, a new personal best of 61.07 metres; a mark that neither he nor any of the other contenders was able to better during the competition.
Indeed, there was only one other athlete able to pass the 60 metre mark: Osmel Charlot of Cuba, who also threw further than ever before at his third attempt, for a result of 60.17 metres.
Bronze was taken by Portugal’s Antonio Vital e Silva, who was unable to improve on the PB of 59.57 metres, which he set during the qualification rounds yesterday. His best effort today was a second round 59.30, which he followed by four fouls.
Four other athletes in the final managed to throw new personal bests.
