Event Report - Boys' Hammer Throw

FacebookTwitterEmail

Sandor Palhegyi restored the hammer throw title to Hungary this evening as he threw a new Championship record of 81.89 metres for the gold medal at his second attempt, Hungary’s first medal of  the IAAF/Maroc Telecom World Youth Championships.

Only in the last edition of the World Youth Championships had a Hungarian not won this event, with Russia’s Mikhail Levin beating Kristof Nemeth of Hungary into second place in Sherbrooke (CAN).

Tonight Palhegyi soundly revenged that defeat and backed up the bronze medal he won in Sherbrooke in 2003, as he threw four metres further than his closest adversary, Ukraine’s Artem Vynnyk. Great Britain made its first incursion into the Hammer medal tables, with Alexander Smith taking the bronze medal with a throw of 73.77.
