Event Report Men 200m Semi Finals

Ato Boldon (Trinidad & Tobago) was fastest in the 200m semi-finals. Boldon won the 2nd heat in 20.09. Three fastest were all running in heat two. 2nd was Frank Fredericks (Namibia) with time of 20.18. Jon Drummond (USA), who had troubles in previous rounds, now qualifying easily with 20.29. Winner in heat 1 was Claudinei da Silva (Brazil), who had one false start in the race. Da Silva came from the back to win the race in 20.35. Ivan Garcia (Cuba) took second with 20.39. The audience was delighted to see a personal best of 20.43 by Georgios Panagiotopoulos (Greece). He was third in heat 1. Also through to the final got 4th in 1996 Olympic Games, Obadele Thompson of Barbados (20.46) and Patrik Stevens of Belgium (20.42). Among those who didn't make it were 1997 World Indoor Champion, Kevin Little (USA) and 1997 U23 European Champion, Julian Golding (Great Britain).
