Wilfred Bungei (KEN) won the final sprint to take the men’s two-lapper.

With a tight field contesting the whole race, things started to liven up as they entered the final 200 metres of the race, with Bungei and his countryman Joseph Mutua sprinting for the line in a closed pack with Mbulaeni Mulaudzi and Hezekiel Sepeng from South Africa.

As Bungei edged ahead, followed by Mutua, who had led the field through 400 metres in 53.03,  Andre Bucher (SUI) came up on the outside with Wilson Kipketer (DEN) trailing him to snatch third and fourth places from the two South Africans.

Bungei crossed the finish line in 1:45.97, with Mutua timed at 1:46.13 and Bucher at 1:46.28.

Bungei was delighted afterwards: "I am very happy because I did not expect to win against everyone who was at the World Championships. Only the World champion is not here.

"It was very hard for me to miss the trials for the Championships. You can imagine: to prepare for something since January but two days before you get sick with fever.."
