The 2003 World champion and the only thrower over 90 metres this season, Russia’s Sergey Makarov re-emphasised his number one status with the spear with an 85.66m to 84.33m victory over World record holder Jan Zelezny.

The 30 year-old Russian’s performance was quite remarkable in very difficult wind conditions which meant only the top two throwers went past 81.00 metres, and that standard was good enough for third place for Boris Henry. The German who was also third at the World Championships in Paris dragged that distance out with this final fling of the afternoon, having begun with a lowly 77.47m effort and then two fouls.

While Zelezny had the advantage of competing first, he was not able to capitalise on the throwing order producing 77.86m with his opening effort, though he made more impact with his second round opener of 83.82m, which provided enough competitive motivation to inspire Makarov’s winning 85.66m, which came in that same round.

Zelezny immediately made his reply in the next round with an 84.33 release but in the windy conditions throwing was a lottery, and his fourth and final throw (81.08m) could not improve his position any further.

The only other athletes over 80 metres were Russia’s Aleksandr Ivanov (80.58m), and Estonia’s World championships silver medallist Andrus Varnik (80.43m).
