Maryam Jamal, of Bahrain, and Yuliya Chizhenko, from Russia, won their heats of the women's 1500 metres here tonight.

The first heat was dawdled in 72, 70 and 73-second laps, before Jamal and Tatyana Tomashova, of Russia, turned on the class on the final lap, finishing in 4min 10.58sec and 4:10.74.

The slow first heat meant that both final places for astest losers would come from the second heat, in which Russia's Yelena Soboleva ensured a better early pace, (68.44 at 400m), which was maintained through to 1,200 metres by France's Bouchra Ghezielle.

Chizhenko, the Russian champion, looked very easy as she unwound her stride off the last bend to come home in 4:07.26, ahead of Gelete Bati (ETH; 4:07.35).

Sixth and seventh in this heat were Irina Krakoviak (LTU) and Helen Clitheroe (GBR), whose 4:09.11 and 4:09.13 gave them final places.
