It took US Indoor champion Janay Deloach three attempts to get it right this morning in Istanbul but when she did, she did so in style. Deloach landed at a season’s best 6.90, the best ever Long Jump qualifying mark in the history of the World Indoor Championships.

With the automatic qualifying standard being set at 6.75, only one woman this morning was able to pack her bags before the end of the competition and that was Shara Proctor who improved her national indoor record to 6.86 with her second attempt.

Proctor’s mark was an improvement of 6 centimetres on the previous British standard she set in Birmingham three weeks ago. It was also the second best ever performance in a qualification round at the IAAF World Indoor championships.

To underscore the depth of this morning’s competition, at the other end of the table Karin Mey Melis will have the unfortunate honour of setting the longest ever jump not to advance to a World Indoor Championships Final.

The home crowd favourite landed at a respectable 6.62 with her second jump and at that stage of the competition she was safely within the top 8. But that was without counting on a tremendous final round which saw no fewer than four athletes go past her.

Nastassia Mironchyk-Ivanova was the last qualifier as she could back her last round 6.62 effort with a second round 6.60 against Mey Melis’ fouls in round 1 and 3.

Other notable qualifiers include defending World Indoor champion Brittney Reese (6.72) and European Indoor champion Darya Klishina (6.65) although she will be the only Russian represented in the final following Elena Sokolova’s disappointing 6.58 for tenth.
