Papua New Guinean record holder Toea Wisil not having achieved the 'A' or 'B' qualifying times of 11.29 or 11.38 was the fastest qualifier in the first ever Olympic Games Women's 100m preliminary round.

The progressive system which offers an opportunity for those who failed to make the grade during the qualifying period to go into the First Round proper tonight, saw the 24-year-old running into a wind of -1.6m/s post a time of 11.60.

Wisil fourth in the 2010 Commonwealth Games 100m came on a morning when the idea introduced into the programme at last year's IAAF World Championships to allow the less talented performers the opportunity to mix it with the big sprint names, again proved highly successful.

The 36 athletes taking part in the four heats managed to produce one National record from Asenate Manoa of Tuvalu - better known as the Ellice Islands and situated in the Pacific Ocean midway between Hawaii and Australia.

Manoa making her second Games appearance and lowering her mark from 13.72 to 13.48 may have as in Daegu last year, failed to progress but like many others was given the chance to compete at the highest level in the traditional Olympic Games spirit.

With the first two and two fastest losers going through there were a total of 10 personal best performances achieved, although further involvement after this evening's rounds will be extremely difficult, given the world class sprinters who will be in action.
