27 June 1999 – Padova, Italy – Cuban Ivan Pedroso leapt to a new season’s best of 8.60m in Padova’s meeting on Sunday. With less than two months to go now to the IAAF World Championships, Pedroso proved once again that he will be the man to beat in Seville.

In a city where he is used to excel – he jumped 8.70m there three years ago – Pedroso took advantage of the favourable weather conditions and a tail wind blowing at 1.80m/s to respond to Yago Lamela’s 8.56m established last Thursday in Turin.

Pedroso, who jumped 8.60m at his third attempt, had begun the contest with a leap of 8.11m and landed at 8.20m on his second attempt. He then fouled his fourth attempt, which wasn’t very far from the 9m mark and then jumped another excellent 8.54m before fouling his last jump.

The long jump contest in Seville promises to be an exciting duel between Yamela and Pedroso.
