Murielle Ahoure of the Ivory Coast broke the African 100m record when running 10.78 (1.6m/s) at the Star Athletics Pro Meet in Montverde, Florida on Saturday (11).

The 28-year-old's run catapulted her to the top of the world list and brought her home marginally in front of Jamaica's Veronica Campbell-Brown, who was runner-up in 10.83.

Ahoure's run eclipsed the African record of 10.79 held by Nigeria's Blessing Okagbare since 2013, and took three hundredths of a second off her previous best of 10.81, which was run in London last July. Earlier in the day, Ahoure had run a marginally wind-aided 10.80 (2.1m/s) in the premilinary rounds.

Joanna Atkins finished third in the final in 11.09, while world junior 200m champion Kaylin Whitney finished fourth in 11.17.

World youth champion Candace Hill finished fifth in 11.19, but the 17-year-old sprint sensation was back to winning ways in the 200m later in the afternoon, dispatching a field of seasoned international sprinters several years her senior to win in 22.38. The time would have broken her own world U18 best of 22.41 but for an illegal following wind of 2.1m/s.

Shalonda Solomon was runner-up in 22.59, with Jamaica's Kerron Stewart third in 22.69.

Tyson Gay took victory in the men's 200m in 20.21 (1.6m/s) ahead of Justin Walker (20.26).

The men's 100m saw a sub-10 clocking from USA's Marvin Bracy, who routed the field to win in 9.94 (1.8m/s) ahead of runner-up Aaron Brown (10.01) and Clayton Vaughn (10.02).

Candice Price impressed when winning the 100m hurdles in 12.75 (1.4m/s), while the men's 110m hurdles saw Devon Hill edge US compatriot Antwon Hicks in a tight race, 13.33 to 13.37 (2.2m/s).
