The Netherlands’ Nadine Visser ran a sparkling 13.24, just 0.03 off her national junior record over the barrers, to lead the heptathlon after the first event, the 100m hurdles. Visser’s mark was worth 1089 points.
Visser, fourth in last year's European Junior Championships, won the second of three heats, which had the three leading marks; after Visser, USA’s Ashlee Moore ran 13.59 for 1037 points, and France’s Esther Turpin 13.85 for an even 1000 points.
Defending champion Yorgelis Rodriguez, from Cuba, was seventh in that second heat in 14.18, good for 953 points but a little slower than might have been expected. She now stands 10th overall.
