World Athlete of the Year 2016 longlist – jumps, throws and combined events

With just five days to go before voting for the 2016 World Athletes of the Year draws to a close, here’s another look at this year's men’s and women’s longlist candidates, concluding today with those who excelled in the jumps, throws and combined events.

Ruth Beitia (ESP), the Olympic, European and Diamond Race champion in the high jump. The 37-year-old was unbeaten at 10 successive contests since June, won world indoor silver and had a season’s best of 1.98m.

Thiago Braz (BRA) thrilled the host nation with his 6.03m Olympic and South American record when taking pole vault gold in Rio. His performance was also the world lead.

Ashton Eaton (USA) successfully defended his Olympic title in the decathlon, tallying 8893 to equal the Olympic record. The 28-year-old also won the world indoor title in the heptathlon, produced world leads indoors (6470) and out (8893) and was unbeaten in both events.

Caterine Ibarguen (COL) won the Olympic and Diamond Race triple jump crowns and was the world leader with 15.17m. The 32-year-old won nine out of 10 finals and produced five of the year’s eight longest jumps.

Sandra Perkovic (CRO), the Olympic champion, European champion and Diamond Race winner in the discus. The 26-year-old was the world leader with 70.88m, was unbeaten in 11 competitions, produced the year's five longest throws and eight of the longest 10.

Christian Taylor (USA), the Olympic champion and Diamond Race winner in the triple jump. The 26-year-old won seven out of eight finals in his specialty, was the world leader with 17.86m and produced the four longest jumps of the year.

Anita Wlodarczyk (POL), the Olympic and European champion in the hammer, and the IAAF Hammer Throw Challenge winner. The 31-year-old set two world records, 82.29m and 82.98m, and was unbeaten in 12 competitions.

The winners will be announced at the IAAF Athletics Awards 2016 in Monaco on Friday 2 December.

The Voting Procedure for the 2016 World Athletes of the Year:

A three-way voting process will determine the finalists.

The IAAF Council and the IAAF Family* will cast their votes by email, while fans can vote online via the IAAF's social media platforms. Individual graphics for each nominee have been posted on the IAAF's Facebook and Twitter accounts; a 'like' or 'favourite' will count as one vote.

The IAAF Council’s vote will count for 50% of the result, while the IAAF Family’s votes and the public votes will each count for 25% of the final result.

Voting closes on 1 November. At the conclusion of the voting process, three men and three women finalists will be announced by the IAAF.

The male and female World Athletes of the Year will be announced live on stage at the IAAF Athletics Awards 2016.
