Preview: men's discus – IAAF Continental Cup, Marrakech 2014

Deprived of the continent’s biggest throwers, Piotr Malachowski and Robert Harting, Europe has turned to former world and Olympic champion Gerd Kanter and Poland’s Robert Urbanek to maintain their dominance of the discus.

The pair finished second and third to Harting at the European Championships in Zurich and will be hoping to take maximum points here. But neither has been at their best this year and could face a serious threat from Cuba’s world and Olympic finalist Jorge Fernandez who has a season’s best of 66.50m, the longest in the field.

Australian Benn Harradine could also spring a surprise for the Asia-Pacific team if he can return to his early season 65-metre form, while Jason Morgan will be looking for another podium finish after his Commonwealth bronze for Jamaica back in July.

After finishing fifth at the IAAF World Championships last year, Victor Hogan had a disappointing Commonwealth Games but made amends by winning his second African title in Marrakech last month. The South African will carry Africa’s hopes alongside Nigeria’s Stephen Mozia.
