Carl-Gustav Tollemar passes away

CarloIt was with extreme sadness that the IAAF received the news today from Svenska Friidrottsförbundet, the Member Federation for Sweden, that Carl-Gustav Tollemar, the Honorary Chairman of the IAAF Technical Committee had passed away last night (3).

Carl-Gustav Tollemar (born 28 January 1924), who was a recipient of the IAAF Veteran Pin in 1993, was an Honorary Member of the Board of Directors of Svenska Friidrottsförbundet.

Tollemar’s lifelong passion for and dedication to the sport of Athletics saw him elected in 1981 at the IAAF Congress held in Rome in conjunction with the World Cup as a Member of the IAAF Technical Committee. At the 36th edition of Congress in Rome in 1987, he became Chairman, a position he held until standing down in 1999 at the 42nd Congress where he was made Honorary Chairman of the Technical Committee. Tollemar was also a member of the IAAF Organisation Working Group from 1984 to 1987.

When the IAAF World Championships came to Tollemar’s homeland in 1995 with Gothenburg’s Ullevi Stadium hosting the 5th edition of the championships, he served as Competitions Director. Tollemar also acted as an IAAF Technical Delegate at many World Championships and Olympic Games.

During Tollemar stewardship of the IAAF Technical Committee there were major steps made in the development of guidelines for the planning of track and field facilities, setting international standards for the various products used in athletics from equipment to track surfaces, a resource of knowledge which today is represented by the fourth edition of the IAAF Track and Field Facilities Manual which was published in 2008.

The IAAF on behalf of the global athletics family offers its condolences and sympathy to the family and friends of Carl-Gustav Tollemar who will be sadly missed.
