Dr Mihaly Nyerges passes away at 64

The IAAF is deeply saddened to receive the news from the Hungarian Athletics Association that after a short and serious illness, Dr Mihaly Nyerges, a respected leader of Hungarian and European athletics, unexpectedly passed away on 31 December 2010 in Budapest at the age of 64.

A former decathlete of the Hungarian national team, he held the position of General Secretary for nine years and Vice President for six years in the National Federation. Since 1981, he played a prominent role in the organisation of all international athletics events in Hungary.

He had been a member of the EAA Council for seven years and received the Plaque of Merit from the European Association for his meritorious service.

As a university professor, he founded and led the Hungarian sports management education at the Hungarian University of Physical Education where he also served as dean for two consecutive terms.

He will go down in the annals of Hungarian and European athletics history for his human qualities, devotion to work and his beloved sport. He will be sorely missed.
