Former USATF President Jimmy Carnes dies

Jimmy Carnes (USA) died of prostate cancer on 5 March at the age of 76.

A middle distance runner at Mercer University in the 1950s, Carnes turned to coaching at Furman University in 1962 and then coached at the University of Florida 1964-76, founding the Florida Track Club.

He became president of the U.S. Track & Field Federation (USTFF) in 1979 and was the first president of the newly created US governing body, The Athletics Congress (TAC), 1980-4, as USA Track & Field (USATF) was known when it began operations.

Later Carnes was the first executive director of the United States Track Coaches Association, in office from 1993 to 2004.  He had been named as head coach of the US Olympic team in the boycott year of 1980.
