The IAAF President Lamine Diack conferred the IAAF Silver Order of Merit on Japan Association of Athletics Federation (JAAF) Honorary President Yohei Kono, to honour his contribution to the global development of the sport, at a special luncheon in Tokyo on Monday (8).
President Diack was passing through Japan after attending the Asian Championships in the Chinese city of Wuhan, which ended on Sunday.
“I don’t really know what to say but I am honoured and grateful for the IAAF Silver Order of Merit,” said Mr Kono.
“I have worked in the world of athletics for a long time but never received an honour until now. I am happy to have finally received one, especially because Silver Order of Merit is such a special one.
“When I took over the position of the President from Mr Hanji Aoki, he kept telling me that we have to work closely with the IAAF, especially under the leadership of the President of the IAAF.
"Japan has always wanted to fulfil its responsibility in the IAAF; and we are grateful for the good relationship we have with the IAAF,” he added.

de l'IAAF au président honoraire de la fédération japonaise
d'athlétisme, Yohei Kono, en
reconnaissance de sa contribution au développement global de
l'athlétisme. Cette cérémonie était organisée dans le cadre d'un
déjeuner spécial organisé à Tokyo ce lundi (8).
Le Président Diack était de passage au Japon après avoir assisté aux Championnats d'Asie, organisés dans la ville chinoise de Wuhan, qui se sont terminés dimanche.
"Les mots me font défaut, mais je me sens vraiment honoré, et suis très reconnaissant que l'IAAF m'ait remis cet Ordre du mérite d'argent, a déclaré M. Kono.
"J'officie dans le monde de l'athlétisme depuis longtemps, mais je n'avais jamais reçu, jusqu'à aujourd'hui, de distinction quelconque. Je suis très heureux d'avoir été ainsi honoré, d'autant que l'Ordre du mérite d'argent est quelque chose de si spécial.
"Lorsque j'ai succédé, en tant que président, à M. Hanji Aoki, il m'a répété à maintes reprises à quel point il était important que nous collaborions de manière rapprochée avec l'IAAF, particulièrement avec son président.
"Le Japon a toujours tenu à remplir ses obligations envers l'IAAF, et nous sommes reconnaissants des bonnes relations que nous entretenons avec elle."
