IAAF President Lamine Diack received the Order of Merit I Class by the President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych at a ceremony on Wednesday (4).
At the beginning of the meeting the Ukrainian President expressed appreciation of the fact that Ukraine will host the meeting of the IAAF Council this weekend (7-8) in which representatives of 33 countries will take part.
Yanukovych stressed that Ukraine has considerable achievements in sports. "Today we do everything so that achievements of Ukraine continue. Therefore, promotion and development of mass sport in schools and among youth is a problem we are working on and hope for your support in this work," he said.
President Yanukovych said Ukraine appreciates the fact that President Diack has done so much to promote and develop international athletics and awarded President Diack with the Order of Merit I Class.
President Diack thanked Yanukovych for the award and said that the organization carefully follows the development of sports in Ukraine and the state’s preparations for hosting EURO 2012. “One of our tasks is to ensure that athletics returns to schools,” President Diack said.

Le Président Diack reçoit l'Ordre du Mérite des mains du Président ukrainien
Le Président de l'IAAF Lamine Diack a reçu l'Ordre de Mérite de l'Ukraine, Première Classe, des mains du Président de l'Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych lors d'une cérémonie organisée ce mercredi 4 août.
Le Président ukrainien a commencé par exprimer sa satisfaction quant au fait que l'Ukraine va accueillir ce week-end (7 et 8 août) la réunion du Conseil de l'IAAF, à laquelle prendront part des représentants de 33 pays.
Yanukovych a rappelé que l'Ukraine possède un palmarès sportif éloquent. "Aujourd'hui nous continuons à tout faire afin que l'Ukraine continue à s'illustrer sur le plan sportif. C'est pour cela que nous mettons l'accent en permanence sur la promotion et le développement du sport pour tous à l'école, et nous espérons pouvoir compter sur votre soutien dans nos efforts," a-t-il dit.
Le Président Yanukovych a encore exprimé son appréciation quant à tous les efforts consentis par le Président Diack pour promouvoir et développer l'athlétisme international avant de remettre au Président Diack l'Ordre du Mérite de Première Classe.
Le Président Diack a remercié M. Yanukovych pour la décoration et déclaré que la fédération internationale suit avec intérêt le développement du sport en Ukraine et les préparatifs du pays en vue de l'Euro de Football 2012. Il a encore rappelé: "Une de nos tâches consiste à nous assurer que l'athlétisme reprenne sa place dans les écoles."
