The Venezuelan Athletics Federation has informed the IAAF of the sudden death of its President, Dr. Nelson Augusto Rodriguez Freites on 13 June 2010 in Caracas, Venezuela.
Nelson Augusto Rodriguez Freites, 63 years old, was an honourable lawyer, coach and sports leader, and notably also the Vice-President of CONSUDATLE, the IAAF Area Association for South America.
“The IAAF and the athletics world as a whole will mourn the passing of a firm friend of our sport whose passion and contribution to athletics will be sadly missed,” commented IAAF General Secretary Pierre Weiss. “He will be missed very much and will always remain in our heart and thoughts. May his soul rest in peace.”

La Fédération vénézuélienne en deuil après le décès de son président
La Fédération vénézuélienne d'athlétisme a informé l'IAAF du décès soudain de son président, le docteur Nelson Augusto Rodriguez Freites, survenu le 13 juin 2010 à Caracas, au Venezuela.
Nelson Augusto Rodriguez Freites, 63 ans, était un avocat éminent et un entraîneur et administrateur sportif des plus respectés. Il était notamment le vice-président de CONSUDATLE, l'Association régionale de l'IAAF pour l'Amérique du Sud.
"L'IAAF et le monde de l'athlétisme tout entier sont en deuil après la disparition d'un excellent ami de notre sport, un homme dont la passion et les contributions qu'il apportait à l'athlétisme vont nous manquer cruellement, a déclaré Pierre Weiss, le Secrétaire Général de l'IAAF. Nous ne l'oublierons pas et il demeurera à jamais dans nos cœurs et dans nos pensées. Que son âme repose en paix."
