20 yearold double European Junior sprint champion Ivet Lalova of Bulgaria has run 10.77 (+0.7) to win the women’s 100m at the European Cup, Division One, Group A match in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, today.
Lalova's run was a national record and beat Belgium's Kim Gevaert (11.17) into second.
The young Bulgarian took both the 100m and 200m titles at the European Junior Championships in Tampere, Finland last summer, had personal bests coming into today’s competition of 11.06 (30 May) and 22.86 (6 June) which were both achieved earlier this year.
Only Americans Florence Griffith-Joyner, Marion Jones and Evelyn Ashford, Jamaica’s (now Slovenia’s) Merlene Ottey, and France’s European record holder Christine Arron have ever run faster; Russia’s Irina Privalova has also run 10.77.

Abeylegesse wins 3000m
In the other European Cup, Division One match which was taking place today in Istanbul, Turkey, the newest of World record breakers Elvan Abeylegesse who set new marks for the women's 5000m in Bergen last week, won the 3000m in 8:49.14.
At the end of the first day in this match Spain (66pts) is leading the men's and Italy (70) the women's competition. Finland and Hungary are in joint second behind Italy with 57 points each, while Slovenia heads (52) Finland (51) for second place behind the Spanish men.
