MonteCarloDennis Mehlfeld of Germany and Heidi Freitag of the USA were the winners of the men’s and women’s races at the Half Marathon of Monaco on Sunday (21).

Running in pleasant conditions under cloudy skies Mehlfeld clocked 1:08:56 to win handily over Frenchmen Anthony Caveriviere (1:13:27) and Jean-Sebastien Koch (1:14:35) from nearby Menton.

Freitag jumped to the lead early and was never headed, reaching the line in 1:25:32. Mariana Weber of Monaco was second in 1:26:50, and Italy’s Joyce Kagume Muthone third in 1:29:02.

Due to the French regional elections held on Sunday, the Fédération Monégasque d’Athlétisme was unable to organise a full marathon race this year, but by all accounts the Half Marathon, run within the boundaries of the Principality, was a solid success. More than 1800 runners from 39 countries participated in the Half Marathon and the 7th annual 10Km of Monte-Carlo.

Local athletes Omar Bachir and Kais Adli finished 1-2 in the men’s 10Km, clocking 31:50 and 31:53, respectively. Italian junior Celestina Malugani won the women’s race in 38:24, ahead of Frenchwoman Ann-Sopjie Celant, who clocked 39:33.
