1948 Olympic Relay gold medallist dies

Yesterday, Nettie WitziersTimmer, the second leg relay runner in the Dutch team of Gerda van der Kade-Koudijs- Xenia Stad de Jong and Fanny Blankers-Koen, which won the Olympic 4 x 100 metres title at London 1948 died at the age of 81 years (Tuesday 25 Jan).

Witziers-Timmer’s death comes nearly exactly a year after the death of her teammate Fanny Blankers-Koen. It was the first time four married women had won an Olympic title.

In 1946, Witziers-Timmer was also a member of the team, which became European Champions in Oslo. The team was: Martha Adema, Fanny Blankers-Koen and Gerda van der Kade. With these same teammates in 1944 she also bettered the World record for 4 x 110 yards (47.4) and with Lies Sluyters, Fanny Blankers-Koen and Gerda van der Kade-Koudijs also the World record for 4 x 200 metres (1:41.0). The 4 x 200 metres mark stood for six years (1950). Nettie Witziers-Timmer never won a Dutch title.
