2.01 world lead for Vlasic in Bucharest

Blanka Vlasic, the reigning World indoor championships silver medallist, leaped a world-leading 2.01 to highlight the 2nd Monica Iagar Grand Prix International high jump competition in Bucharest on Friday (09).

With her second attempt clearance, the 23-year-old Croatian star defeated Bulgaria's Venelina Veneva, last year's European Championships runner-up, who topped out at 1.98.

Vlasic was perfect through 1.85, 1.89 and 1.95 before needing two tries at 2.01. Three tries at 2.03 proved too much. Her next competition is on Tuesday in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia, where she cleared 2.05 last year, an indoor career best.

Veneva too was perfect through 1.98 before failing three times at 1.98, while perhaps the biggest surprise was sprung by Italy's Antoinetta di Martino whose second attempt clearance at 1.98 equalled the Italian national record set by Antonella Bevilacqua in 1994. Romanian Oana Pantelimon was fourth with a 1.95 best.

Cuban Victor Moya won the men's event with a 2.30 effort on the countback over Italy's Andrea Bettinelli, who equalled his indoor best. Grzegorz Sposob of Poland was third, clearing 2.28.

A crowd of 2000 was on hand while the event also received television coverage.
