The Games of the XXXI Olympiad will be hosted by Rio de Janeiro.
The host city of the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics was announced this evening at the 121st Session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Copenhagen, Denmark, 2 October 2009.
"I would like to warmly congratulate Rio de Janeiro for becoming the host of 2016," said IAAF President Lamine Diack, who was present in Copenhagen. "I believe it is right that the Olympics shows its universal appeal by going to South America for the first time."
"Athletics will be held in a venue that has already hosted our sport during the Pan American Games so I am extremely confident we will have a great Games," Diack added.
A long day of presentations by the four candidate cities – Chicago (USA), Madrid (ESP), Rio de Janeiro (BRA) and Tokyo (JPN) – was followed by the final report of the Evaluation Commission which was presented by its Chairwoman Nawal El Moutawakel, who is an IAAF Council Member.
The IOC Members then began voting with a first round seeing the immediate elimination of Chicago, with Tokyo the next to be removed from the race, leaving a head to head battle between the remaining two cities of Madrid and Rio, the decision of the final vote being declared by IOC President Jacques Rogge at an official announcement ceremony at 18:52hrs local time (16:52 GMT).
"I believe that all four candidates were excellent and this shows the strength of the Olympic movement," Diack said. "But in sport there must be a winner and Rio is a worthy champion today"
The selection process had begun in September 2007 when the IOC announced the names of seven applicant cities, Baku (Azerbaijan), Chicago (USA), Doha (Qatar), Madrid (Spain), Prague (Czech Republic), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and Tokyo (Japan), with this list being cut down on 4 June 2008 to today’s four contenders by the IOC’s Executive Board.

La ville hôte des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques d'été 2016 a été annoncée ce soir, le 2 octobre 2009, lors de la 121e Session du Comité International Olympique (CIO), qui s'est tenue à Copenhague, la capitale danoise.
"Je tiens à féliciter chaleureusement Rio de Janeiro pour avoir été choisie comme ville hôte olympique pour 2016, a déclaré M. Lamine Diack, le Président de l'IAAF. Je pense qu'il est indispensable que l'olympisme démontre son attrait universel en organisant les Jeux en Amérique du Sud pour la première fois de son histoire.
"L'athlétisme va se dérouler dans l'enceinte d'un stade qui a déjà accueilli notre sport, à l'occasion des Jeux Panaméricains, et je ne doute pas un instant que nous allons assister à des Jeux superbes."
Une journée intense de présentations par les quatre villes candidates – Chicago (USA), Madrid (ESP), Rio de Janeiro (BRA) et Tokyo (JPN) – a été suivie par le rapport final de la Commission d'évaluation, présenté par sa présidente, Nawal El Moutawakel, par ailleurs Membre du Conseil de l'IAAF.
La procédure de vote par les Membres du CIO a suivi, avec le premier tour entraînant l'élimination de Chicago. Ce fut ensuite au tour de Tokyo d'être éliminée, laissant en lice les deux seules villes de Madrid et Rio. Le résultat du dernier tour de scrutin a été annoncé par Jacques Rogge, Président du CIO, lors d'une cérémonie officielle, à 18h52 heure locale (16h52 GMT).
"Pour moi chacun des quatre candidats était excellent, une indication claire de la force du Mouvement olympique, a dit M. Diack. Pour autant il faut un gagnant en sport, et Rio est aujourd'hui un vainqueur valeureux."
Le processus de sélection a démarré en septembre 2007 lorsque le CIO avait dévoilé les noms des sept villes candidates à l'organisation des Jeux: Baku (Azerbaïdjan), Chicago (USA), Doha (Qatar), Madrid (Espagne), Prague (République tchèque), Rio de Janeiro (Brésil) et Tokyo (Japon). Cette liste a ensuite été réduite, le 4 juin 2008, par le Conseil exécutif du CIO, aux quatre villes candidates présentes ici.
