2 August 1999 – Niort, France (AFP) – Aimé Nthepe made his first appearance in the French National Championships this weekend in Niort, with an impressive 100 metres victory in 10.16.

But this student of architecture who was born in Cameroon will need that country’s permission to compete for France, as he competed under the Cameroon flag in the Francophone Games two years ago.

Jean Galfione suffering from a painful left elbow came third in the pole vault, leaving Alain Andji, who made good use of the favourable conditions to gain an easy victory with 5.60m. The pole vault competition was also without Romain Mesnil, who gave a brilliant performance in the European under-23 competition in Gothenburg, Sweden, with 5.93m.

Eunice Barber was not on her usual form but came through to win with a leap of 6.76m on her last try.

Driss Maazouzi, who broke the French record in Paris last month, held back throughout a tactical 1500m, coming through at the finish to win with a time of 3:44.53.

A sixth-year medical student specialising in orthopaedics, Jean-Laurent Heusse, recorded an excellent 49.34 to become French 400m hurdles champion, just behind Senegal’s Ibou Faye (48 sec 93).

In the 400m Marc Foucan recorded the third best French performance all-time with 45.31 (just behind another Senegalese Ibrahima Wade, 45.21), and Yamna Belkacem, ran the women’s 1500m in 4:11.63.

The French team will consist of fifty-five athletes, the names of which will be announced on August 12.
