Mariya Abakumova’s 64.38m metre throw in the Javelin highlighted the Sustersic and Cvetan Memorial meeting in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on Sunday (29).

Abakumova, this year’s world leader at 68.89m from her victory at the Samsung Diamond League opener in Doha, reached her winning effort in the second round. The Russian Olympic silver medallist and this year’s European bronze medallist backed it up with a 63.01m throw in the fourth round and 60.93m in the third.

Still on the comeback from injury, Slovenia’s national record holder, Martina Ratej, also threw beyond the 60-metre line three times, finishing second with a 60.70m best from round five.

The late afternoon sunny conditions in the Slovenian capital gave way to rapidly cooling conditions as the evening progressed, hampering some of the action on field.

The memorial 100m dash, honouring Slovenian sprinters Matic Sustersic and Patrick Cvetan who died in an automobile accident five years ago, was won by Jamaican Marvin Anderson in 10.21, who edged South African Simon Magakwe (20.26). Magakwe doubled back to win the evening-capping 200m in 20.73.

Ukraine’s European champion Olha Saladuha won the women’s Triple Jump with a 14.31m best, ahead of Slovakia’s Dana Veldakova (14.23m) and Snezana Rodic (14.17m) of Slovenia.

A first-attempt clearance at 5.55m gave Brazilian Fabio Gomes da Silva the victory in the Pole Vault. The South American record holder at 5.77m, da Silva went out at 5.65m. American Jeremy Scott took second over Poland’s Przemyslav Czerwinski, the European bronze medallist.

World junior champion David Mutua of Kenya won a tactical 800m in 1:50.08, just 0.03 ahead of South African Johan Cronje. Mutua lowered his personal best to 1:45.90 at the Memorial Van Damme in Brussels on Friday.

There was a minor upset in the men’s 400m Hurdles, with Czech Josef Prorok taking the victory in 49.90, well clear of Jamaican Markino Buckley (50.38), a 2008 Olympic finalist.

Jamiacan Edino Steele took the men’s 400m in 46.39 and Russian Natalya Nazarova the women’s in 52.41.

The Ljubljana fixture was the seventh in the eight meeting Slovenian International Grand Prix series. The final will take place in the southeastern city of Brezice on 8 September.
