Alekhina surprises with world-leading 15.14m Triple Jump, Alminova continues to impress - Russian Champs, Day 4

Unheralded Nadezhda Alekhina produced of of the biggest surprises of weekend with an impressive Triple Jump victory as the Russian national championships concluded in Cheboksary today.

Coming into the competition with a modest 14.31m season's best, Alekhina reached a world-leading 15.14m (w+1.9) to become only the second 15m jumper of the season.

Anna Pyatykh was well back to take runner-up with a 14.67m best, just ahead of Ekaterina Kayukova who reached a personal best 14.64m.

Anna Alminova continued to impress in the middle distances. The European indoor 1500m champion won that event on Sunday with a strong 3:58.38 run, her first venture into sub-four minute territory and her second career best in three days. On Thursday (23) the 24-year-old clocked 1:57.86 in the heats of the 800m, the fastest in the world this year, but she did not contest the final.

In a fast race, Natalia Yevdokimova also dipped under four minutes clocking 3:59.66 for second, her fastest performance in four years. Oksana Zbrozhek continues to improve, clocking 4:00.86 for third.

Elsewhere, Igor Spasovkhodskiy won the men's Triple Jump with a 17.22m leap, the 29-year-old's best of the season and the only jumper to sail clear of the 17m line.

Yulia Guschina took the 200m title in 22.71 ahead of Yelena Bolsun 22.80 while Ivan Teplych (20.80) took the men's title. Twenty-year-old Ivan Tuhtachev (3:43.43) was the surprise winner of the men's 1500m, ahead of Andrey Osipov (3:43.48) and Alexander Krivchenkov (3:43.66).

Returning from a doping suspension Tatyana Lysenko threw 76.41m, the third longest throw of the year. Oksana Kondratieva, the daughter of Olympic champions Lyudmila Kondrateva and Yuriy Syedykh, was a distant second with a 67.84m throw. Aleksei Zagorny took the men's title with a throw of exactly 80 metres, ahead of Igor Vinichenko (77.69).
