As a short sidebar to our series of Olympic reminiscences ahead of the Athletics competitions of the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad in Athens, ALSO on this day in Los Angeles (11 August 1984), Sebastian Coe (GBR) retained his Olympic 1500m title.

Coe’s time of 3:32.53 was an Olympic record.

We draw attention to this notable anniversary because on 22 July this year a new book on the famous Coe versus Ovett rivalry was published in the UK.

“The Perfect Distance: Ovett & Coe – The Record Breaking Rivalry”

Published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. The author is Pat Butcher, the Athletics Correspondent of the Financial Times.

The fully authorised, inside story of Steve Ovett and Sebastian Coe’s intense rivalry on the track which climaxed at the Los Angeles Olympics.
