MonteCarloApril is the traditional month of major city marathon running, in the coming weeks we have classic races such as Boston, London, Rotterdam, Paris... to name but a very few.

To reflect this annual awakening of the marathon spring, the IAAF Statistical Office namely in this respect Ottavio Castellini and Carlos Fernandez Canet have compiled and today published a large list of data for the half marathons and marathons already contested this year. This information, updated on a regular basis like all the IAAF season lists, will be of invaluable assistance to all those trying to keep track of performances on the roads this spring.

These substantial lists are based upon 1:03 half marathon / 2:18 marathon performance standards for men and 1:13 and 2:42 standards for the same disciplines for women.

Currently the fastest of the 137 performances so far registered in 2007 for the men’s marathon is the 2:08:04 of Korea’s Lee Bong-Ju, and in the women’s category of the 119 performances the 2:23:12 of China’s Wei Yanan is the quickest. Both marks were set in Seoul, Korea on 18 March, and with April, the Month of Marathons, about to swamp us with further statistics look for these marks to be overtaken on the roads very soon.

The Half Marathon lists are of course headed by Kenyan Samuel Wanjiru's two World records (58:35 and 58:53) which are currently pending ratification, and in the women's standings by Kayoko Fukushi of Japan (1:08:00).
