Arnold surprises with hurdle performance at Stadionfest

28 August 2001 - Koenigs Wusterhausen, Germany -  Dominique Arnold rode a 2.0 tailwind to a 13.14 clocking to win the 110 hurdles Tuesday night in the 8th Stadionfest in the village of Koenigs Wusterhausen, 15 km southeast of Berlin. For Arnold, it was a seasonal best and put him in the number-four position among the world’s hurdlers for 2001. The time equalled the second fastest of his career, and it came on a day when cold, blustery weather made things difficult for all of the athletes. “I really had no idea that I would be this fast,” he said afterwards.  “My best this year had been 13.26.  To think it would come under such bad conditions is super.” This meeting has traditionally been held in partnership with the ISTAF meeting in Berlin, with the winners in specified events being guaranteed a place in that Golden League wrap-up on Friday.  The hurdle race was one of the eight so-designated events. “I really like these small meetings where I can completely relax and do my thing without a lot of worry,” continued Arnold, as he looks forward to meeting the other top hurdlers in three days. During the midpoint of the programme came the traditional helicopter landing, as a promotion for the ISTAF meeting.  Along with meeting director Stephane Franke arrived long jump world-record holder Mike Powell and freshly-minted high jump world champion Martin Buss.  (See attached photo.) It was fitting that they should be appearing together, since Buss will depart from his usual event to compete in the long jump on Friday, since there is no men’s high jump scheduled. On paper, the men’s hammer competition in Koenigs Wusterhausen looked strong, with two Olympic champions—Poland’s Szymon Ziolkowski and Balazs Kiss of Hungary—plus European Champion Tibor Gecsek topping the list of competitors. But the weather conditions caused universal technique problems, such that Ziolkowski’s winning mark of 78.31 came from “my worst competition in the entire season”.   The Poznan resident will have two more competitions during the year, at the Goodwill Games in Brisbane and finally at the meeting in Yokohama.  Then, he will immediately start to prepare for next season. “The European Championships are very important for me.  After winning in Sydney and Edmonton, I’d like to complete the ‘triple’in 2002.”
