Athletes 2001 – Portraits of Champions
5 December 2001 - Monte Carlo - Convincing more than 100 athletes from 37 countries - including scores of Olympic champions, World champions and world record holders - to volunteer for an out-of-the-ordinary experience was no easy task.

As well as our colleague Laura Arcoleo, who worked tirelessly to make this project happen, we would like to pay tribute to the photographers Michael Steele and Stu Forster. Once word began to spread around athletic circles - and especially at the Golden League meetings - that Michael and Stu, besides being world-class sports photographers (for "Allsport") were also top portrait artists, athletes flooded the studios where the sessions took place. Noting the tremendous response, the IAAF decided to gather these images - taken in the months between the Golden Gala in Rome in June  and the ISTAF Meeting in Berlin on 31 August - into one neat volume. The result is a beautiful collection of  studies of athletes away from their normal competitive context: a compendium of striking images of stars present and future.

This hardcover volume contains in its 152 pages portraits of 117 athletes in black and white and color photographs on high quality glossy paper and includes many personal quotes from the athletes. See photos of 21 of the World Champions from Edmonton 2001 and 16 Olympic Champions from 37 different countries as they have never been seen before.
