Athletes honoured in Kenya and Uganda

Athletes dominated the Kenyan Sports Personality of the Year prize as announced in Kenya on Saturday (24), while in Uganda the names of their country’s top athletes of 2008 were announced by the federation on the same day.

Olympic 800m champion Pamela Jelimo and marathon champion Samuel Wanjiru were crowned Kenyan 2008 Sports Personality of the Year in Nairobi, Kenya.  In the poll Jelimo finished ahead of Olympic 1500m champion Nancy Jebet Lagat and 3000m steeplechase bronze medallist Eunice Jepkorir.  Wanjiru beat Beijing 800m champion Wilfred Bungei, and swimmer Jason Dunford in the men’s vote.

In Kampala, the Ugandan federation declared Moses Kipsiro, the Olympic Games 5000m fourth placer, as their Athlete of the Year.

Athlete of the year: Moses Kipsiro
1st runners up: Benjamin Kiplagat
2nd runners up: Abraham Chepkiwrok
Upcoming female athlete: Doreen Chesang
Upcoming male athlete: Moses Kibet
