The streets of the British capital were alive with athletics action yesterday (30) with test competitions taking place on the loop courses which make-up the proposed routes for the Marathons and Race Walking events at the Games of the XXX Olympiad, London 2012.

A 10km Road Race and the men’s and women’s 20km Race Walk competitions which followed  that run, gave Londoners who were enjoying a public bank holiday on Monday, albeit a cloudy one, a taste of the sporting excitement they can expect when the Olympic Games comes to town in August 2012.

The five road events on the Athletics programme at the London 2012 Olympic Games (men’s and women’s Marathons, the men’s and women’s 20km Race Walks, and the men’s 50km Race Walk) will each be held on the streets of Central London, finishing in The Mall.

The organisational aspects of the entire Athletics programme are well in hand with the IAAF working in good and close cooperation with LOCOG, the Organising Committee of Games of the XXX Olympiad. This cooperation was officially cemented on a recent visit to London when IAAF General Secretary Pierre Weiss met LOCOG Director of Sport Debbie Jevans to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between the two sports bodies.

The Athletics competitions of London 2012 take place from the 3 to 12 August.
