Australian National Series kicks off in Brisbane

Youcef Abdi and Emma Rilen won their respective 1500m races at the Bank of Queensland Classic in Brisbane, AUS last night (3 Nov), the first of Athletics Australia's newly revamped eight-meeting National Series.

In a close contest, Abdi, a former national champion and 2002 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, took the lead at the 800m mark to score a narrow 3:40.95 win over Collis Birmingham (3:41.00). Rilen, who clocked 4:19.80, was an easy winner, finishing nearly 10 seconds ahead of runner-up Anna Worland.

The National Series competitions were introduces this year to provide specific head-to-head competitions and qualifying opportunities for the national championhips and upcoming Commonwealth Games, and are a prelude to the upcoming Telstra A-series, Australia's premiere series of competitions, which commences on 26 January in Canberra. Each meeting focuses on a specific series of events.
