The first leg of Moravia High Jump Tour in Hustopece near Brno in the Czech Republic saw some excellent results.
The packed sports hall (nearly 1000 spectators) first saw an excellent display by Russia’s 1997 World Championships silver medallist Olga Kaliturina who won the women’s competition with a successful first time clearance at 1.95m, a new meet record and equal to the current world season lead.
In the men’s competition, the 20 year-old Jaroslav Baba from Havirov near Ostrava in his first competition of the year cleared 2.35m. At 2.23m, nine competitors were still in the contest. But at 2.25 only Baba jumped it on his second. Jan Janku had passed 2.25 and only he and Baba tried for 2.27. Janku´s jumps were not bad, but not successful but Baba went clear on his first try to take the win. He then passed 2.29 and went for a new meet record of 2.31m. On his third try he did it and bettered his best mark from 2003 by one centimetre.
Baba went directly to 2.35m and on his second leap cleared without touching the bar, with some centimetres to spare. Full of excitement and with support of Van Halen legendary song ‘Jump’ he unsuccessfully tried a new Czech record of 2.37m.
