Walnut, USAJuan Luis Barrios of Mexico got the best of Anthony Famiglietti again in the 5000m at the 51st Mt. San Antonio College Relays at Hilmer Lodge Stadium on Friday (17).

Barrios won a homestretch duel over Famiglietti and Chris Solinsky to win in 13:16.65 for his second victory in three years at this annual spring fixture. Famiglietti was second in 13:17.98 and Solinsky third in 13:18.41.

The race was a replica of the 2007 Mt. SAC race between Barrios and Famiglietti where the U.S. steeplechaser led for the majority of the race before Barrios pulled out the victory, 13:11.37 to 13:11.93, in the fastest two times in meet history.

Meet Record for Emanuel in the 1500m

Lee Emanuel of Great Britain started a legacy of his own in the 1500m.

The University of New Mexico student set a meet record 3:37.99 to break a 13-year-old Mt. SAC meet standard, a 30-year-old New Mexico school record, and his PB of 3:40.77.

The Mt. SAC triumph followed his victory in the mile in the NCAA Indoor Championships last month.

“I’m ready to race anyone right now,” a clearly confident Emanuel said. “I step on the track thinking that I can beat anyone in the country.”

Kenyan Philes Ongori, who was seventh at the 2007 World Championships in the 10,000m, was as dominant as Emanuel in the women’s 5000m to win in 15:23.33, and early season world leader. Christin Wurth-Thomas, an Olympian in the 1500m last year, was a distant second in 15:34.17.

Torrence Wins Puma Mile

David Torrence, 23, generated the loudest ovation of the evening after winning the Puma mile in 4:01.13 in a race for unattached runners. His victory earned him a one-year sponsorship contract. The 2009 US indoor ,000m champion wore his high school jersey from nearby Loyola High of Los Angeles with cowbell-ringing spectators lining the homestretch and backstretch.

The University of California graduate uncorked a bottle of champagne and was awarded a World Wrestling Federation style belt for his win.
