Mutaz Essa Barshim has been confirmed for the Stockholm BAUHAUS Athletics meeting on 30 July, organisers of the IAAF Diamond League meeting announced on Tuesday (9).
The Qatari high jumper has won both his IAAF Diamond League outings this year, in Shanghai and then Eugene last month, and set meeting records at both of them, clearing 2.38m and 2.41m respectively.
Last year, he set an Asian and IAAF Diamond League record of 2.43m in Brussels to become the second-best high jumper of all time.
However, he is going to have to at least equal that feat from the Belgian capital if he is to add the Stockholm stadium record to his extensive list of accolades because Swedish superstar Patrik Sjöberg cleared 2.42m there back in 1997 for what was then a world record.
Barshim’s coach is Stanislav ‘Stanley’ Szcyrba, who was based in Sweden for many years and had great success at Malmö AI club, in particular with world indoor and European indoor medallist Linus Thornblad.
“I really want to jump high on 30 July at the Stockholm BAUHAUS Athletics and give the crowd something special," said Barshim. "Through my coach, I have a close connection to Sweden and have spent a lot of time in this beautiful country. I love the historical Olympic Stadium and it will be great to compete there again."
