Jenko Bensa of Yugoslavia won the San
Diego Marathon in 2 hours, 19 minutes,
27 seconds Sunday.
Dzmitry Sivou of Belarus was second in 2:20:47, and 2001 winner Andrey Kuznetsov of Russia followed in 2:23:23.
The 24-year-old Bensa overcame recent injuries to both Achilles' tendons and a bout with the flu.
“You think about everything in a race that's two hours long,” he said. “You can't just run without thinking about the bad things. You must focus to eliminate the pain.”
Alena Vinitskaya of Belarus won the women's race for the third time in four year, finishing in 2:46:25. Julieanne White of Vista was second in 2:52:49.
