Ato Boldon and Maurice Greene maintained their status as the world's top two 100m runners,
but wind wiped out any chance of them bidding for a world record and earning a $200,000
bonus.
Boldon, a native of Trinidad, won his 100m heat in the revived Modesto Relays with a time
of 9.89, and Greene, of the United States, won his heat in 9.91. Both times were
wind-aided. The cash bonus had been offered to any runner who broke the world record of
9.84 set by Canada's Donovan Bailey in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
But Boldon said he knew long before the race that the wind would wipe out any record time.
"I knew four days ago we'd have a hard time," he said after consulting an
Internet weather service. "I dont think anyone was thinking of the mark. Going
into the blocks, I knew what it was like because of the wind.''
Still, his time of 9.89 was excellent, especially for someone with a sore right hamstring
that forced him to back off halfway through the race.
"I really didn't feel like I was pushing it at any point,'' said Boldon, reigning
200m world champion. "I don't feel like I gave a great effort out there.'' Greene,
the defending world champion in the 100m, ran his time with a slightly milder tailwind,
and Boldon said "Maurice's race was faster, no question about it.''
In other events, Stacy Dragila tied her own American record in the women's pole vault by
clearing 4.45m.
American Anjanette Kirkland tied the meet record of 12.70 in the women's 100m hurdles,
matching the time set by Jackie Joyner Kersee in 1988.
In addition to the $200,000 bonus for breaking the men's 100 record, there was a $50,000
prize offered for a women's world record in the 100. American Inger Miller won the women's
100m in 11.06, far off the world record of 10.49 set by Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988.
