19 June 2000 – St Petersburg - Yuriy Borzakovskiy opened his summer season with an impressive 400 m run on Sunday evening at Znamenskiy memorial in St.Petersburg. He registered a new personal best of 46.14 while his previous result was 47.43.

Yuriy will continue running the 400 m. He makes it a part of his Olympic training. He is planning to run his first 800 m this summer in the IAAF Golden League meeting in Paris (June 23) and Russian coaches asked his manager not press him very hard at this meeting. But it is clear that Yuriy can run there with his personal best and set a new national record.

We‘ll see him again in 400 m run at the European Cup. Borzakovskiy will compete there in the 4x400 m relay, together with the winner in St.Petersburg Anton Galkin (46.09), Dmitriy Golovastov and Andrey Semenov. It is quite possible that rapid improvement in 400 m will let him make it his Olympic distance in 4x400 m.

Windy cold weather and rain affected the results in St.Petersburg. But some athletes managed to achieve quite impressive level. In the long jump Vladimir Maliavin showed 8,25 and become the second Russian long jumper who achieved qualification standard to enter the Olympic team. Previously it was done by Vitaliy Shkurlatov, who jumped 8,21 in Greece at Kalamata.

In the discus throw Dmitriy Shevchenko again become the Russian leader in the event – 66.38. Tibor Gechek from Hungary took the first place in hammer throw (78.44), Russian Sergey Kirmasov was the second with 78.43.

For the first time jumpers and throwers were making only four attempts and did not like this innovation for the IAAF meetings. The winner in long Jump Vladimir Maliavin said that he needed to create a new attitude to the competition and a new tactic.

The winter European champion 20 years old Svetlana Pospelova rather easily won the 400 m with 50.90. She says that she just begins building her form and was rather afraid before the first start of her season.

Irina Mistukievitch continues to improve her results in 800 m. This time she easily won with a personal best 1:57.49. She says that it is only the beginning. The season is very long and there is enough time to achieve 1:56–1:55 to get a berth in the team and go for a medal in Sydney. Some days ago she ran 400 m with her best mark – 51.87.

Olga Kuznetsova showed 4:03.47 in 1500 m and now it is quite clear that she will be able to achieve the qualification standard 4:03.00 and enter Olympic team.

Athletes from 18 countries participated in the Znamenskiy Memorial but many international stars did not come to St.Petersburg because the meeting could not afford their appearance fees.
