Brazilian Hederson Estefani steals the show - South American Junior Champs

São Paulo, BrazilThe host nation retained its regional supremacy by dominating the XXXVIII South American Junior Championships, event held at the “Estádio Ícaro de Castro Mello” in São Paulo on 25-26 July.

On top of its traditional dominance, the Brazilians also showed the talent of its young blood, such the case of 400m/400 Hurdles specialist Hederson Alves Estefani, born on 11 September 1991 in the State of Paraná.

Brazil dominated the medal table with a total of 22 (13 gold, 6 silver, 3 bronze), followed by Chile with 10 (3-3-4), Argentina with 6 (2-2-2), Panama with 1 gold, and Colombia with 7 (0-4-3). In the team classification, Brazil collected 474 points, leaving the rest very distant; Colombia added 131 points, Chile 123, Argentina 118, Venezuela 70, and Ecuador 61.

The seventeen year-old Estefani was clearly the athlete of the weekend, setting a pair of Championship records, with 46.20 in the 400 flat (PB), and 51.07 in the hurdles. Here, surpassing the 20 year-old mark set by his compatriot and the three-time Pan-American Games Champion, Eronilde Nunes de Araújo (51.12 in Montevideo ’89), who’s still the South American Junior record-holder (50.15, São Paulo, 30 July 1989).

“The 400 Hurdles is the event I like the most, since is more technical. I’m very happy with my weekend. My results have been very good,” said Estefani who couldn’t improve his PB of 50.87 at the Hurdles, set at the recent Brazilian National Junior Championships in Uberlândia, on 12 July.

Although Saturday (25 July) was rainy and cold, the women’s 400m race was also of very good quality. There, another promising Brazilian talent, Bárbara Farias de Oliveira (São Paulo, 12 March 1991) bettered the Championship record with her 53.44sec time. Farias de Oliveira has just run a National junior record time of 53.03 at the 2009 “Troféu Brasil” in Rio de Janeiro on 5 June.

“The weather wasn’t great, but I’m very happy because I was able to beat an old Championship record”, said the 18 year-old. The previous CR was 54.06, and had been set in 1983 by Brazilian Jucilene Garcez, later equaled in 2001 by former IAAF World Junior and Youth medalist, Colombian Norma González.

Two other Championship records were beaten, both at women’s throwing events. Brazilian Andressa de Morães threw the Discus twice to 55.27m on Saturday (25 July). The 18-year-old Brazilian (20 December 1990), coached by Cuban Julián Mejía in Bragança Paulista achieved her performance in her first and last attempts. The mark is also a new national junior record.

In the Javelin Throw, Colombian Lucelly Murillo (Valle del Cauca, 5 May 1991) threw 50.08 in her fifth round, beating locals Jucilene de Lima (South American junior record holder with 56.75) and Rafaela Torres Gonçalves (54.33 PB). Murillo is the Colombian junior record-holder with 53.18.

With this event, the junior athletes of the region got ready for the upcoming Pan-American Junior Championships, to be held in Tobago, Trinidad & Tobago, on 31 July-2 August. The Champions for men’s 10,000m, both Race Walking and Combined Events will be extracted from the classification of Pan-American Junior Championships.
