This year’s Brighton Marathon winner and course record-holder, Dominic Kimwetich Kangor, will return to defend his title on 6 April, the IAAF Bronze Label Road Race race organisers announced on Thursday (19).
In April this year, the Kenyan smashed the previous course record by an impressive 1:17, reducing it to 2:10:46.
He has since finished third at the Melbourne Marathon in October and last month successfully defended his Kampala Marathon title, but his run on England’s south coast remains the fastest marathon of his career.
Kimwetich Kangor, 24, will be the first athlete, man or woman, to successfully defend the Brighton title if he wins next year.
“Brighton has a special place in my heart because it is where I set my best time,” said Kimwetich Kangor. "The crowds are so massive and support me, it is like running at home.”
“Having an athlete of Dominic’s calibre return to defend his title in Brighton sends out an important message to the rest of the running world,” said race founder Tim Hutchings.
“He knows this is a fast course and an experience to relish. Athletes like him, after all, have many spring marathons to choose from and I’m sure he’ll go faster on our adjusted marathon route.”
The chances of a course record are high as the race organisers recently announced several important changes. A flat section has been added in mile five to make up for a hill which has now been taken out of the tenth mile.
