Canada announces World Junior team

Athletics Canada have announced the twenty eight athletes that will comprise the Canadian team competing at the 11th IAAF World Junior Championships in Beijing, China, August 15 – 20.

Bruce Pirnie, Athletics Canada Director of Development Programs, is very confident in the abilities of the team heading to Beijing.

“This team will be very competitive on the international stage and the coaching staff is confident that we will achieve our objective of improving on our performances from 2004 in Italy.”

Pirnie adds, “We have a team with a lot of international experience and expectations are high for these athletes to be in the medal hunt.”

Brian Barnett enters the World juniors at the tail end of an excellent season in which he broke two provincial junior records held by World Championship medallist Tyler Christopher, and set a meet record on his way to winning the 400m Canadian junior championship. Barnett also won the men’s 200m event. 

Reid Gustavson will go into the World juniors enjoying the best season of his young career. At the Canadian juniors Gustavson posted personal bests in nine of the ten decathlon events, and broke the Canadian junior record on his way to the Canadian junior title.
