Stockholm, SwedenThe DN Galan ‘Big Shot’ is bigger than ever. For the 3rd consecutive year Stockholm’s DN Galan – Samsung Diamond League (6 August 2010), will organise their Shot Put competitions, called the ‘Big Shot’, in the picturesque downtown city square of “Kungsträdgården”, one day before the main meeting takes place in the 1912 Olympic stadium.

The event which is free of charge for the spectators, will witness a men’s competition, which this year is one of the designated Diamond Races in Stockholm’s Samsung Diamond League schedule, and a world class international women’s Shot, as well as a Youth competition.

This Shot Put spectacular takes place on Thursday 5 August, and will offer other fun events for the general public and even a celebrities’ Shot Put to entertain Stockholm’s athletic fans.

The men’s competition will feature the current Diamond Race event leader, Christian Cantwell of the USA. Emphatically the current best exponent of the discipline, Cantwell, the reigning World champion indoors and out, is after four wins out of four in the Samsung Diamond League, the clear favourite.

Among those ready to face the 29-year-old American will be Poland’s Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski, the winner at this event last year, and two younger putters from America Ryan Whiting and Cory Martin, the latter who put 22.10m earlier this year. The 2008 ‘Big Shot’ champion, 2005 World champion Adam Nelson, is steadily improving after injury and will not give up his title too easily.

While the women’s competition isn’t a designated Diamond Race event in Stockholm this year - the 32 event disciplines of the Samsung Diamond League are distributed between the 14 meetings on an annual rotation basis - the Olympic and World champion Valerie Vili of New Zealand is taking part. Vili, who is a Samsung Diamond League Ambassador, will face tough competition from the World Indoor champion and current world season leader Nadezhda Ostapchuk of Belarus.
