Cantwell and Kanter headline men's throws fields in Eugene - Samsung Diamond League

World Shot Put champion Christian Cantwell of the USA and Beijing Olympic Discus Throw champion Gerd Kanter of Estonia will be the headline acts in the men's throws at the 36th annual Prefontaine Classic, the sixth stop on the 14-meeting Samsung Diamond League series, at Eugene's Hayward Field on 3 July.

In all, entrants in the two events have amassed an astonishing 20 Olympic and World Championships medals.

Cantwell, who won his second straight and third overall World indoor title in March, is currently riding a 15 meet unbeaten streak, one which includes Samsung Diamond League victories in Doha, Oslo and Rome. In Eugene, he'll be pressed by Poland's Tomasz Majewski, the reigning Olympic champion;  American Reese Hoffa, the 2007 World champion; the current world leader at 22.10m Cory Martin; NCAA champion Ryan Whiting, who just joined the 72-foot club with his recent 21.97m effort; and crowd favorite Adam Nelson, twice the Olympic silver medallist.

Backing up Kanter, this year's world leader at 71.45m, are two-time Olympic gold medalist Virgilijus Alekna from Lithuania; America’s No. 1, Casey Malone; Athens Olympic silver medalist Zoltan Kovago of Hungary, and Beijing silver medalist Piotr Malachowski of Poland. Kovago reached his season's best of 69.69m to win the the first Diamond Race event in Shanghai, while Kovago took the victory in Rome with a season's best 67.78m.
