Nordhausen, GermanyChristian Cantwell, the reigning World Shot Put champion indoors and outdoors, opened his 2011 indoor season with a 21.21m world-leading effort at the 11th International Energie Shot-put Indoor in Nordhausen, Germany, on Friday (21).

Competing before 2000 spectators at the Wiedigsburgcomplex, Cantwell won the competition for the third year in a row, beating back fellow Americans Reese Hoffa and Corey Martin. Hoffa reached 21.00m with Martin topping out at 20.45m.

While he fell shy of his own 21.47m meet record, Cantwell was satisfied. “I feel at home here in Nordhausen,” he said.

Germany’s Ralf Bartels, the reigning World bronze medallist, however, wasn’t satisfied with his 20.28m best effort of the day, which left him in fourth place.

“I couldn’t use the so-called Nordhausen Effect, like I did in past years,” said Bartels, who has a full schedule ahead of him this indoor season which will culminate at the European indoor championships in Paris in March.

Germany’s Marco Schmidt’s best effort was 20.10m to round out the top five.

The team competition was dominated by the Americans, who defeated the German squad, 21 points to 12.

The women’s competition was dominated by Christina Schwanitz who won with a fourth round 18.33m toss, an effort which punched her ticket to the European indoor championships.

“I knew that I’m in a good condition and I’m very happy to win at this spectacular meeting in Nordhausen,” she said.

Josephine Terlecki was the runner-up at 17.88m, an indoor career best. Troubled by knee problems, pre-meet favourite Denise Hinrichs was third at 17.81m. The condition, according to doctors, isn’t serious.
